Tamil Nadu: Heart transplant made possible with green corridor from Madurai to Chennai
Madurai: Heart of a brain dead person was successfully transported from Madurai to Chennai using a green corridor on Wednesday.
The green corridor was created from the Apollo Hospital in Madurai to Airport, the air ambulance and police convoy carrying the heart started from the hospital at 11:49 am and reached the airport situated 16.8km from the hospital within 14 minutes, reports The NewIndian Express.
From there the heart was taken to Apollo Hospitals in Chennai.
On the other hand, his lungs were taken to the Fortis Malar Hospital in Chennai in a cargo flight.
The organs belonged to one, R Muthupandi (37), a resident of Thirumangalakuruchi in Kovilpatti , who was working as a load man in the city and fell off a two wheeler in an accident on Monday. He was rushed to the nearby government hospital, which further referred him to Apollo Hospitals for treatment.
However, unfortunately the patient could not be saved and the Apollo Hospital declared him brain dead. Soon after, the family members were persuaded by the doctors to donate his organs and contribute to the noble cause.
As the family members gave consent, his heart, lungs, kidneys and corneas were harvested by a team of doctors on Wednesday.His liver and a kidney were donated to two patients in Apollo hospitals in Madurai and his other kidney was preserved at the Madurai Kidney centre.
His corneas were sent to Aravind Eye Hospital located in Madurai.
