Patient dies after surgery, MKCG doctor accused of unauthorised referral

Berhampur: A 28-year-old man allegedly lost his life due to complications following a surgery at a private nursing home, after being referred from MKCG Medical College and Hospital, prompting serious allegations of medical negligence against a senior doctor.

According to the news reports, the deceased, Balaram Gouda, son of Ramesh Gouda, was a resident of Baghalati village in Ganjam district, was admitted to MKCG Medical College on July 10 after sustaining injuries in a bike accident. He was initially treated in the casualty ward under the care of a senior orthopaedic surgeon.

The victim’s family lodged a complaint accusing the doctor of negligence. They stated that the doctor informed them the patient’s injuries were severe and claimed that MKCG Hospital lacked the necessary infrastructure for effective treatment. The doctor reportedly advised that Balaram be transferred to a private facility—Binayak Hospital in Goilundi—assuring a swift recovery within two days if treated there.

Acting on his advice, the family admitted him to the private clinic, where surgery was conducted on July 13. However, complications arose during the procedure, leading to Balaram’s death. The family alleges that they were denied access to him during this critical period and were later told he would be referred to a hospital in Bhubaneswar.’

Following this tragic incident, the deceased patient’s brother lodged a complaint accusing the senior doctor of gross medical negligence. Based on the complaint, Baidyanathpur police registered a case (352/25) and initiated an investigation.

Police sources revealed that the doctor is currently absconding and unreachable, with his phone switched off.
