Notice listing shortcomings at Konni medical college stirs row, withdrawn

Kottayam: Highlighting serious gaps in infrastructure, a notice listing eight shortcomings at Government Medical College and Hospital, Konni has sparked controversy, particularly as the hospital is located in the home district of state Health Minister Veena George.

A notice reportedly displayed by the head of the general surgery department informed patients about the limitations of the hospital before undergoing surgical procedures.

The notice titled "Consent Form" listed eight shortcomings and warned that patients should be aware of the hospital’s constraints while opting for surgery.

According to the notice as reported by TOI, the hospital does not have some essential equipment required for surgeries, which could lead to life-threatening situations. The notice also stated that the hospital lack a well-equipped intensive care unit and had a shortage of adequately trained staff and skilled personnel in the theatre.

Apart from infrastructure gaps, the notice also raised concerns about infection risks due to peeling paint inside the hospital building. It stated that the hospital currently has no specialists in cardiology and nephrology.

The notice further mentioned that the hospital pharmacy functions only till 5 pm, and that there is the presence of wild animals on the hospital premises. The notice also carried a serious allegation that it was struck following the instructions of the health minister.

After the issue came to light, Medical College Superintendent Dr A Shaji sought an explanation from the HoD. The notice was later removed by hospital security staff on the instructions of the superintendent.

Meanwhile, the health minister's office denied the allegations raised in the notice.
