Fact Check: Can Jayphal and Milk Cure Pigmentation in 10 Days?

An Instagram reel claims that Jayphal and Milk Cures Pigmentation in 10 Days. The claim is FALSE.
Claim
In an Instagram reel it is claimed that Jayphal and Milk Cures Pigmentation in 10 Days. In the reel by upasanakiduniya it is said, "Today I am going to talk to you about remedies and treatments that can help a lot in getting rid of pigmentation Most viral remedy: nutmeg and raw milk. Nutmeg is described as having a scraping action. When melanin accumulates in one area, it forms a dark spot. When nutmeg is rubbed in raw milk and applied to the skin, it is believed to create a scraping effect. After 10 days, the skin may start reacting, and changes in the area can be seen, including light and dark patches appearing."
The claim can be seen here.
Fact Check
The claim is FALSE. There is no scientific evidence or medical consensus to back the claim that jayphal and milk cures pigmentation that too in 10 minutes.
What is skin pigmentation?
Skin pigmentation refers to the coloration of the skin, primarily determined by the presence and amount of melanin, a pigment produced by specialized cells called melanocytes. Melanin synthesis and distribution vary significantly among individuals due to factors like genetics, UV exposure, and certain medications. Pigmentation can appear excessive (hyperpigmentation) or diminished (hypopigmentation) depending on underlying conditions.
What are the Causes of skin pigmentation?
Skin pigmentation abnormalities can arise from several causes, including:
- Genetic factors – e.g., albinism
- UV exposure – can increase melanin production
- Hormonal changes – such as in melasma
- Autoimmune disorders – such as vitiligo
- Endocrine disorders – like Addison’s disease
- Inflammatory skin conditions – such as eczema or acne vulgaris
- Post-inflammatory responses – leading to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)
- Drug interactions – certain drugs can alter melanin synthesis or skin appearance
Management of skin pigmentation
Management strategies for pigmentation disorders involve a combination of:
1. Topical and oral medications:
- Tyrosinase inhibitors – reduce melanin production
- Anti-inflammatory agents
- Antioxidants
2. Herbal remedies
3. Marine-derived treatments
4. Cosmetic products
5. Clinical supervision
What are the Health Benefits of Jayphal and Milk?
Nutmeg also known as Jayphal exhibits a range of beneficial properties, including antioxidant, immunomodulatory, immunoprotective, anticarcinogenic, hepatoprotective, and anti-inflmmatory activities.
Milk is a nutrient-dense food, supplying energy and high-quality protein with a range of essential micronutrients like calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc, and phosphorus in an easily absorbed form. Milk minerals are crucial for human health and development. They play a key role in healthy human nutrition and development throughout life. Milk is rich in nutrients that are essential for good bone health, including calcium, protein, vitamin D, potassium, and phosphorus.
Can Jayphal and Milk Cure Pigmentation in 10 Days?
There is no scientific evidence to support that applying nutmeg (jayphal) with milk can cure pigmentation within 10 days. While both milk and nutmeg may have certain beneficial properties, neither ingredient has been clinically proven to produce rapid skin lightening or reverse pigmentation in such a short duration.
Milk has certain health benefits. The research by Hanna Górska-Warsewicz et. al. highlights that milk is a rich source of calcium, protein, vitamin D, potassium, and phosphorus, all of which play a crucial role in maintaining bone health. In addition to these essential nutrients, the study also notes that milk contains several bioactive components such as bioactive peptides, probiotic bacteria, antioxidants, vitamins, specific proteins, oligosaccharides, organic acids, highly absorbable calcium, and conjugated linoleic acid, which contribute to its overall functional and health-promoting properties.
Nutmeg possesses several beneficial health properties. In their research, Namra Naeem and colleagues reported that nutmeg may have potential applications in pharmaceutical products due to its antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.
It can be concluded that there is no scientific evidence or established medical consensus supporting the effectiveness of the topical application of nutmeg and milk on the skin.
Dr. Asma Akhlaq, Consultant - Dermatology, CK BIRLA HOSPITALS Jaipur in a conversation with The Medical Dialogues Fact Check team said, "Pigmentation is essentially melasma, caused by the overproduction of melanin due to factors like sun exposure, hormonal changes, certain medications, or genetics. While kitchen remedies like jaiphal (nutmeg) have mild anti-inflammatory properties but they cannot treat deep pigmentation. Similarly, milk contains lactic acid that provides gentle exfoliation and can improve skin texture and dullness, but it only works on superficial tanning, not deeper pigmentation. It is important to be cautious with such remedies, as aggressive use can lead to skin irritation or burns, and in sensitive skin, may even worsen pigmentation; moreover, there is no standardized concentration or proven safety. For effective and lasting results, dermatology-backed treatments such as sunscreen (the most essential step), azelaic acid, kojic acid, vitamin C, retinoids, chemical peels, and sometimes lasers are recommended."
Dr. Padmaja, Senior Consultant Dermatologist, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad further added, "From a medical point of view, there is no strong evidence that nutmeg (jaiphal) mixed with milk can cure skin pigmentation. Pigmentation happens due to excess melanin production, often linked to sun exposure, hormones, or inflammation. While nutmeg has mild anti-inflammatory properties and milk contains lactic acid that can gently exfoliate the skin, these effects are very limited and temporary.
Such home remedies may improve skin texture slightly, but they do not treat the root cause of pigmentation. In some cases, nutmeg can even irritate the skin if used frequently. For effective results, proper sun protection and medically approved treatments are important. It is always better to consult a dermatologist for safe and long-term management rather than relying only on home remedies."
Medical Dialogues Final Take
The claim that applying nutmeg (jayphal) with milk can cure pigmentation and dark circles within 2–3 days is FALSE. While milk has health benefits and nutmeg is sometimes used in traditional remedies as a mild exfoliant, there is no scientific evidence to support that either ingredient can eliminate pigmentation or dark circles in such a short duration
Hence, the claim is FALSE.
